Center Muffler (Resonator), Pro or Con? 700 88

I need to replace the Cat on my '88 740 GLE. I am thinking of using a universal fit converter, removing the center muffler and using a Glasspack or comparable rear muff. My dad did this with his BMW 325i and loves it. Anyone do anything like this? Is the resonator really crucial to the performance of the car, or is it just a noise abatement thing?
