My '87 740 has been sitting at some Mickey Mouse inspection station because the mechanic won't pass it without a new tie-rod. They picked one up at the local Volvo dealer and called me a few hours later saying it didn't fit. Of course I figured they obtained a CAM tie rod when they needed a ZF or vice versa. I went to the garage, looked at my car up on the rack, and saw what I thought was a CAM-style steering rack. I was immediately nervous because I figured the dealer would have asked the right questions to provide the correct tie rod. Anyway, to make a crappy story shorter, I ordered the CAM and ZF tie rods from alloemvolvoparts and found they both were incorrect (wrong threads on the rack side of the rod). I had to cough up almost $140 for a third, mystery tie rod from the dealer (Volvo p/n 9140504, made in the UK). It looks like the CAM style but with smaller threads. I bought this car used with 80K on the odometer. I don't have any reason to think that the rack is anything but original. Who the heck makes this third rack? Whew, I feel a little better already...
