Did i fry my ignition system? 200 81

I replaced all the dead wires in the car, it wouldnt start, was getting no fuel, changed the fuel pump fuses, next time i cranked it the fuse blew. When redoing wires i had a ground looking wire not notated anywhere as having been removed, so, thinking it might be shorting something, i disconnected it, car cranked over, no fuse blew, no start. I put it back on, won't even turn over. Finally traced it down as the ground wire for the "ignition control unit for 83 and later models" (i have an 81 240, took me a while to figure out it had a nonstandard ignition).

So, not knowing any better, i had cranked the engine with the ground wire for the ignition system disconnected. Now the starter won't even crank over. Did i fry my ignition system by trying to start it ungrounded? Or is the lack of turn over probably coincidental? Dash lights come on, battery has been recharged, all fuses LOOK ok (but then, so did the fuel fuse), everything looks ok... only thing i changed was whether the ground wire was connected or not. Help? i'm lost!
