91 740 Turbo - Risk ...... 700 1991

I am considering buying a 91 740 turbo with 140,000 miles on it. I really want a 91 240 five speed but have been having a hard time finding one. I am reluctant to buy a car with this kind of miles and a turbo as the mechanics are telling me that even in a well kept turbo the life expectancy steeply wanes after 150,000 miles. Is this true. I can't afford to get hit with a $1600 turbo job. The mechanics tell me that a 240 wagon with a five speed is the most maintenance free volvo there is. HELP !!!!!!!!!!
