door switch overhaul 700 86

Only one of my door switches that turn on the interior lights was working, so the other day I bought a new one and replaced one of them. I used the old one as a test subject to see if I could fix it. Turns out it wasn't too bad after getting some practice.

I found that the parts that fail are the contacts. Mostly they get some sort of oxidation or something on them and the connection becomes bad. Also, there is a small metal piece that moves back and forth to make a contact. It has 3 tabs to make contact. On of the tabs is for the ground. That one seems to be the one that fails, I cleaned it with a file and bent it outward so it would contact with more force. Also, the ground contact gets some white powder on it (just like my tailgate, hmm) So, I cleaned that. I have fixed all my switches this sway. The only tools I needed were a couple of small flathead screwdrivers to pry the back of the switch off, something to sand connections with, and something to test myself before getting it into the car (multimeter with continuity test). I'd recommend anyone overhaul their switches because it's easy and takes only about 10 minutes after you've learned how with the first switch.

Maybe i'll do it again and create a site with detailed explainations and pictures.

Nathan
