Heater fan R&R Need inspiration. 200 1989

On the morning commute I believe my heater fan choked. It's not only noisy it smells like burnt wires. I could live with the noise but with the smell I believe I am forced to replace it. I've read from the archive some tips on some unconventional means of replacing it. Opinions? Should I go by the repair manual or cut holes. I really don't care how the finished product looks I just need heat as I enter Wisconsin's winter. Thanks for all your input. Bill
