The M46 tranny in my 86 740 NA volvo broke due to an oil leak I suspect, because when I got under there I noticed a socket had been welded onto the filler plug. So then I get a M46 out of a 80 240. There were several differences I had to account for. The length of the bars that hold the stick and the bar that goes into the tranny were shorter on the 80 tranny. I swapped those parts. I also swapped the bellhousings so the clutch would work. I had the parts people switch the circular thing on the output of the 80 tranny to the star one on the original tranny.
Now, one problem is that the gear shift is too low. The bottom of the gearshift hit on the rubber piece. To fix that I put a metal piece to hold the arms up on the inside of the car and secured it with the metal rectangle that holds the rubber down around the gearshift.
Another problem is when in gear, I can move the gear shift back and forth like it is neutral. It seems to move mostly to the left. I can also twist the shifter a little clockwise.
The final problem I have is above 35 I hear a fan type noise. Any ideas on what is worn out?
