Engine wear-O/D vs. no O/D 200 any 'n all

Anybody have any idea how much engine wear is reduced by the O/D? The only Volvo that I have ever had engine problems with ('84 245) was driven mostly on the highway without overdrive for 6+ years and the ol' B23F spun a rod bearing just short of 250K. I didn't fix the O/D because I was told that I needed a new solenoid (tried resoldering & replacing the relay) for $200 and I never thought the damn thing would run for so long.

Wonder if it would still be going today had I fixed the O/D?
