1) I replaced a pinion seal last year in my '79 264. It had to be one of the more difficult jobs I ever did (in terms of using brute force and ignorance). The nut, as I remember it was right-hand threaded. As Ted said, it is torqued to 140 ft-lbs. Yes, buy the correct size socket and use the longest breaker-bar or pneumatic impact gun you can find.

2) The motor mount should sit about 2 inches below the filter. If you have a broken motor mount you will have the filter sitting on the mount. This is BAD. Replace the mount with one from a Turbo or turbo-diesel as they are stiffer and last longer. It's a fairly easy job.

3) When you replaced the rotors did you check that all the pistons slid easily back into the caliper? Volvo calipers have a tendency to rust (at least they do up here in NY). The pistons eventually get stuck in the caliper. One good thing to do is squeeze the pistons back into the caliper every time you rotate the tires. Just remember to pump the brake pedal back up after doing this. It's also a good idea to change the brake fluid once a year.
