I had the radiator replaced in Nov/99 on my 1994-960 with a plastic tank when it had 95,000km. The work was done at a shop that specializes in Volvos. As I was changing the oil filter yesterday I noticed that the plastic piece that is directly under the radiator was wet in one corner. Taking off that cover, I could see that it was moist with coolant at the bottom left corner of the tank. It looks like its coming from the side of the tank where the metal is crimped onto the plastic tank (very close to the bottom corner of the tank). I believe that this may have been going on for a couple of weeks as I noticed my coolant level slowly dropping but didn't take the time to find out why. Started the car up, and after a few minutes, I could that a droplet would form in that corner area.
Has anyone else had similar problems with the plastic tanks? Can this small leak turn into a much larger leak? I'm thinking that this is just a defective tank, as I would have thought that they would have lasted more than one and half years.
I'll be phoning the shop tomorrow to see what can be done about it (since it's over the 1-yr warranty).
