wiring harness, etc 700 1988

Just got a call from my mechanic regarding my 740. It has a turbo and 178k on it. He said the wiring harness is bad and needs to be replaced...the cost will be about $1600!! He also said he would buy the car for parts. If I agree to selling the car for parts what is a fair offer. second, how hard is it to buy a harness and rewire it myself? I once did an MGB GT and it took me a week....any comments are welcome...jeff
