Lifter Noise on 960 900 94

I developed an intermitent lifter noise at around 65,000 miles. Now at 80,000 miles it is all the time. Particularly loud when accelerating. The dealership says that this is "normal" for this engine. Another volvo mechanic says that this is common for the 94' 960 as well as the 850 engine. He said the only solution is valve replacement when you can't take the noise any longer.

Now, with an exhaust leak, my volvo sounds like a VW.

Any suggestions?
