rear nivomat shocks and springs 700 '89

I'm about to change my Nivomat rear shocks. I looked thorugh the FAQ and didn't find the info I seek but it's likely there and I missed it.

I'm told change from nivomats to regular gas or hydraulic boge shocks the springs also have to be changed. What is it about the two making the spring change needed and if boge shocks are put on with the oem springs, what is the result?

Nivomats are expensive and for my curent use of the car self leveling isn't an issue.

Thanks in advance

steve m
