I posted earlier looking for good 4" speaker replacements, but after reading the replies and going through the archives I see that my situation is more involved than that.
I just got my 245 and it is mint; I plan on keeping her for a while and I want the best sound I can afford. I am a professional musician (bass player) and I spend a fair amount of time in my car going to gigs and just getting around. I am willing to spend up to $1000 but would rather spend less if possible. I want a CD receiver (I'm considering the pioneer p3300), two pairs of speakers for front and rear doors, and something for deeper bass in the wayback. A CD changer would be nice, but I suppose I could always add it later as well.; I'm open to a separate amp. I listen to acoustic music a lot, and my overall goals are naturalness, warmth, and clarity: it doesn't have to be really loud or make the whole car vibrate.
My rear seats are folded down 90% of the time and on a given day I am likely to be carrying an upright bass, amplifier, and electric bass in back. I have the hexagonal grilles in the front and square grilles in the back, both for 4" (I think). The rear speakers are virtually totally covered with the seats folded down.
Here are some of my questions:
*Is it true that the hexagonal grilles will fit 5.25" speakers?
*What are my subwoofer installation possibilities? (My upright bass takes up a fair bit of room, but a bazooka tube could fit along the rear of the passenger side wall (next to the locking compartment) and fire into the tailgate, or I could possibly fit an 8 or 10" box there which would fire across the width of the rear [and deflect off of my bass and the other side wall])
*Some posts seemed to mention fitting subwoofers in the locking compartment. Is that really possible? I had thought that would be a good space for a changer and/or an amp.
*Sometimes I have to park in semi-sketchy areas. Any security/determent/camouflage suggestions?
*How would you set up a system given my goals and my limitations?
Thanks a lot for sharing your time and expertise.
