Broken oil pump drive pinion shaft - give up?? :-( 200 1976

Hello, again!

After having to put off working on the car for various reasons, I finally got to work on replacing my oil pump in my 1976 B21F engine. I got the old one out and, as expected, the slotted section of the drive shaft in the oil pump was broken off. Worse, though, the "tang" (little bit of protruding metal that fits into the slot) on the oil pump drive pinion shaft is also broken. This drive pinion is mounted in the block itself. Is there any way to replace this part without disassembling the engine? Or, if disassembly is necessary, can this work be done while the engine is still in the car? I would hate to have to take the head off again and start disassembling the block but if there's a chance of saving the engine, I will do it.

Or should I just give up? I'm feeling pretty discouraged. :-(

Thanks again in advance for any advice. This group has really helped me with all the work I've done so far.
