poor MPG 700 1987

My 740 turbo with 250K miles (engine compresion 150psi) gets about 19-20 mpg. a few years ago, it used to get upwards of 20 mpg consistently. are there some simple things to check to get the car to run more efficiently or is the low mpg due to the age and slightly low compression of the engine?
