Transmission won't shift to 4th 700 1987

Just go the bad news that my 1987 740 Turbo won't shift to 4th gear at highway speeds and that the fix is either a new or rebuilt transmission. The car is used only locally and not very much highway driving. I'm intrested in whether it is safe and will not damage the engine if I forego the transmission replacement.
