240 turbo: stick or autobox? 200 81-85

If you had (or have, heh) a 240 turbo, would you rather have an M46 or an aw70/71 slushbox?

Have heard bad things about the sticks in turbos...i.e. boost drops off between gears and you lose power, first gear is too short because of the final drive (3.73 or 3.91?), etc.

Unrelated: how much power can you add to a turbo with an intercooler? Recall reading that it will be slighly less than one that was intercooled from Gothenburg.
