'88 740 starting problems

My 740 didn't want to take me home from work yesterday. I tried to start it and the starter would crank like crazy but no fire. This has happened twice now. It never dies while I am driving it, but if it sits for awhile after being driven, and then I try to start it, sometimes it doesn't want to start. Both times this has happened, it has been on very hot days. Also both times I let it sit overnight and it started right up in the morning. Any thoughts as to what might be causing this?
