Blower motor causes electrical overheating and short 700 1990

A recently bought 1990 740 GLE Sedan came with a non-functioning blower motor. A mechanic / friend discovered that the wiring to the blower motor has been disconnected - apparently by choice. Upon reestablishing the connection the motor, AC and heating seemed to work OK for a while and then burned out the wiring installation and caused a short. It appears that whenever the blower motor is hooked up the wiring proceeds to overheat even when the blower is not turned on - however the motor and AC seem to function OK.

Anyone have an idea what's going on?
