weird tape player on '89 760 700 1989

I have an '89 760 sedan with an obnoxious tape player. When i got the car, there was no manual and the tape player refuses to take tapes (there is something sticking up inside the actual cassette holder that prevents the tape from going all the way into the player and well, playing). Has anyone ever had this problem? Is there any way to fix it or should I buckle and buy an aftermarket stereo? Thanks.
