Why a fuel pressure regulator? 200 92

Ok, I know why the fuel pressure regulator: To lower the fuel pressure at high vacuum (= low load), Thus helping the injectors delivering less fuel.

HOWEVER: I have been trying for some time now to find the cause for some stumbling at decelleration at my 92 240 B200F M47 and turned my attention to the pressure regulator. Easiest way to troubelshoot: disconnect. So I pulled the vac hose and blanked it off. Drove around: NO Bl**dy difference at all!!

Am I right in thinking that the Pressure Regulator is shot, but the ECO manages to compensate for the high fuel pressure by shortening the falve pulse? How important is the Fuel Pressure Regulator to engine preformance exactly?

Appriciate your input.

Reg.
