Electric Antena Mast replacement

Anyone have experience replacing the mast for their electric antena. The car is an '85 740 Turbo wagon. I installed a new one, however sometimes it engages and only goes down or up about half way. I don't know if the motor is the problem or not. The mast was broken on the car when I bought it so I don't know if it worked correctly to begin with.
