Musical Transmission 740-760 1988

I'm afraid that something is dreadfully wrong with my transmission. Anymore, when it is cold and am just beginning to drive down the road... the transmission sings a whining song as I drive along. It's a six-cylinder 1988 760 GLE.... I'm not sure what automatic transmission is in this... but, is there a such thing as belts needing adjustment... or is the sign of the end of my transmission? Clutch? etc.? Let me know the good news.... but break it to me gently.
