electronic overdrive question 200 81

I was wondering about the electronic od in my 81 245. How does it work? do I have some kind of hybrid auto/manual clutch/torque converter system or just a big solenoid that uses brute force to engage/disengage the od? Can I get a normal (no electronic od) 5 speed transmision for my 81? I am forever almost shifting into 3rd when I am thinking 5th. I've had the car for about a year but old habits die hard.
