George --

Look carefully -- I think that cable is a snap-fit or press-fit into the transmission with O-ring seals. I replaced one last year on my '86, and as I recall, I only had to "pop" it into the tranny (although it took a hefty screwdriver to do it).

If I'm right and if you're lucky, maybe it only has to be reseated.
