Re: Attention anyone who has moved the radio from the lower console to upper dash... 200 1983

Relocating the radio head unit from lower dash to upper dash is not a difficult job at all...Provided thei is a DIN chassis (2inches tall) radio/tape deck...if it is the Big Cjhassis Style it will not fit in the upper dash unless you feel like losing the center venbts and doing lots of plastic panel design work!

Tools needed:

Phillips Screwdriver

Stubby Phillips screwdriver

Torx Driver (depending on year)

Utility Knife

Soldering Iron w/ solder

Needle Nose plyers

Parts needed:

Radio Faceplate kit...METRA and SCOSCHE make them...Crutchfield and Autotoys have 'em on the web...

Chassis Harness Adapter...Metra/Scosche again..if its not an OEM Volvo radio and the original harness has not been butchered..get one and save lots of hassles...

1- 3inch sheetrock screw

Pull the 2 side covers off the center console...look inside near the radio box for the side locking screws and if they are not present then remove the face of the console..there are 2 screws in the carpet at the bottom front...remove them and GENTLY pull the face of the console forward..at is securing the DIN chassis radio in place...held by a screw at each corner of the plate, remove them and the radio and plate should come out...

If there is a mounting sleeve try and remove it without breaking the bendable metal tabs, slide the radio and the sleeve out of the faceplate..unplug the harness connector from the rear of the radio and same for the antenna...

If the soldering/crimping job that was done is ok (no crackles or whatever) then thread the bundle back out the left side/rear of the radio box and snake it up the left side of the console and into the dash area...same for the antenna..actually tape 'em together to make it easier...

Pop off the 2 square gauge covers to the left of the upper radio pocket, remove the 2 screws and slide the pocket out, reach in and locate the radio wire/antenna bundle..pull it as far out of the opening as you can to get it clear of the side covers of the console...

Reinstall the side covers and face of the console..

If the radio is a Shaft style then leave the shaft separator adapter in the new faceplate, if it is a flat face unit cut the adapter away w/ the utility knife. install the sleeve and radio, bend the tabs to hold the radio tightly...connect the radio cables to the rear of the head unit and same fpor the antenna wire...slid ethe head unit into the upper dash pocket and seat it with the faceplate flush on all sides/edges...screw in the 2 phillips screws on the left side...if the right side/edge of the faceplate does not hold into the dash clip, open the glovebpox door, locate the upper left corner of the glovebox opening and drive the shgeetrock screw into the dash panel at a 40 deg to the upper left to pierce the faceplate inner clip and hold the faceplate right edge securely..(this eliminates the need for a radio support brace on the rear a major PITA to install...)

Put the 2 gauge hole covers back on..

Try it and smile...

Again if you have the older Big Chassis radio it will not fit the upper dash without major reworking and it is not worth the time and effort!!!Buy a simple $89.95 special at BB or Kmart and save your bricks dash!
