Re: Leaky Wagon Left Rear Q Panel Glass 200 1985

Paul --

I had a leak -- and rust -- in the lower front of the l/r window. I removed the window to fix the rust, and found grit and sand up in the rubber gasket, along with the rust. I think the leak was caused by the accumulation of stuff, wicking in the water.

After cleaning, priming, filling, and painting, I cleaned out the rubber gasket. "Brake clean" worked well to remove the crud from the groove.

Installing is a trick -- I wrapped a cord around the groove, applied soapy water, set one part of the groove on the lip, and "zipped" it in by pulling the cord around. It's a two-person job -- one holding and pushing, one zipping.

I've done exactly this on tailgate glass, also.

I used NO caulk, and it does not leak.

If you need to paint, allow several days for the paint to harden before zipping (ask me how I know that).

BTW, the rear q-windows seem to be most easily removed bottom first and outward -- but you need a helper to catch the glass. It'll want to fall out once the bottom and sides are free.
