Stuck in drive wont go into overdrive 700 1985

Ok heres the scenario. Car is working fine. Sold to my friend. He gets it and then I went to go with him for a drive and the car never shifted to overdrive. I think this is weird and I notice that the arrow is lit in the dash to stay in drive. He said that he must have pushed it by accident or something. BUT if that happened then it should go back into overdrive after you press it again. Well you can press it all day long and nothing happens. HELP PLEASE. Thanks. Mike
