Before you touch anything you should change the oil to a synthetic motor oil in 10W30 weight and see if that fixes it.

The gearbox can be repaired by someone qualified, it is a m46 with an extension housing for 5th gear. The symptoms you list might be a failure of the thrust washer on 1st gear and the resultant heat causes the needle bearing "cage", which is nylon (plastic), to melt and it can jam the 1st and 2nd hub. Usually if this is the case it will be hard all the time. A snap ring can also slip out of its groove and make for hard shifting.

OIL is the most common reason for tough shifting so it is the simple and cheap thing to try first.
