Re: Center support bearing shot? 200 83

I just changed mine out on my '86. On the '86 the center support (a "rubber" part) and the center bearing are separate parts. I got mine mail order from Global Auto Parts (www.gapa.com). I had the use of a lift, which made it easier, but it wasn't a terribly difficult job. You need to take off the drive shaft on both ends (don't forget to mark the locations of both ends so that you can put it together in the same way when you reassemble it so that it isn't out of balance). Take off the center support crossmember and the whole thing comes down--heavy, be sure you have help and/or a good handle on the thing before loosening the support. The center bearing is nested inside the rubber support. The drive shaft is a two part shaft, so pull it almost apart, and be sure to mark the two shafts so you get them together again in the correct orientation. I don't know if it is best practice, but I marked the two halves with a prick punch. The bearing is pressed on. I used a vice, a hammer and a piece of pipe slipped over the shaft to get the old one off and put the new one on. Be sure to carefully put the new bearing on so that it goes on straight and you do not damage the new bearing. Place the rubber bushing around the bearing, then put the shaft together again. Mount it up and you are ready to go. I live in the South where there is no salt on the roads, but I didn't need any penetrating oil to get the bolts off. All told it took me less than an hour and a half (working slowly) to do it. Hope this works for you.
