Re: Can't get the fuel filter off 200 1987

For something that is supposed to be routine changing the fuel filter is something that I don't enjoy very much! All things considered I've finally decided that the easiest way for me is to remove the filter and the pump from the car and change the filter on the bench. The clamp on the hose from the tank is usually rusted badly on the cars the first time I change the filter and it presents an extra challenge. Also the hose needs to be plugged once it has been removed so fuel doesn't run out in large

quanities. Remove the electrical connections and then tackle the outlet line. I have a very large set of adjustable pliers that are very good at holding the filter while trying to remove the outlet line (I believe at this point I have already taken the bolts out that hold the pump/filter assembly so I can get a grip on the filter, but memory isn't clear on this point). Once the outlet line is off you can remove the assembly to the bench. This is also a great time to remove the gasoline saturated undercoating from your hands. It is relatively easy to swap the filter on the bench and reverse the procedure to install. Use a new hose clamp on the inlet hose and grease it so that it is easier to remove next time. Oh yes- be sure to use new copper rings on the fittings or at least resurface them on light abrasive paper. They have a tendency to leak if they don't have good surfaces. I will also warn you not to try to hold the filter with a wrench while trying to tighten the hose as the metal is extremely soft and is EASILY perforated if the wrench slips- and perforated in this case means ruined; my memory is quite clear on that point !!
