760 idle fluctuation and hesitation on accellaration 700 1987

This year for the first time I have had problems with my 1987 760 running smoothly. After starting and driving for a while the idle needle fluctuates up and down, say when stopping at lights. The engine jumps and the car shudders which is most irritating. Also on accelleration, there is considerable hesitation, and also sometimes loss of power generally. I read some postings tracking a similar problem down to a fault fuel pressure regulator. Any ideas?
