Paul,

I just tracked a similar sound to the top of the strut/strut bearing. Actually the clue was when the strut broke through the rubber isolation piece that is molded into the strut bearing plate. I'm unaware of the setup that 200 series cars have, but replacing this fixed the same type of noise.

To check: with the hood open, bounce the front suspesion and see if the top of the strut is moving at all.
