Rattling Catalytic 200 1986

Thanks to those of you who helped me fix my idling problem. It seems that cleaning the throttle body has dont the trick! Now on to the next problem.

My catalytic is rattling. I suspect that the filler has hardened and is rendering it useless. I expect to receive a pollution summons soon, so I might as well fix it now.

My question is this: Am I able to replace it with an aftermarket catalytic? Does anyone recharge/refill catalytics? Is it normal for it to fail at about 180K miles?

Advice gladly accepted.
