Re: Can I get to my in-tank fuel pump in my 1982 wagon without pulling the fuel tank out? 200 82

Hi Gary: Yes, you can pull the in-tank pump/fuel gauge sending unit assembly out the top of the tank through the access port. Haynes covers this (fairly well, actually) on pages 4A7-4A8. In your wagon, you'll first have to remove the floor of the cargo compartment, then the access cover, disconnect the wires and hoses (the fuel return line has a threaded disconnect fitting just above the rear axle) and use some sort of tool (I used a pair of long handled-short bladed garden shears with duct tape over the blades to minimize the risk of spark!) to rotate the retaining ring counterclockwise before removing the assembly out the top of the tank. Disconnect your battery terminals before you start, don't pound on anything that would create a spark, and be sure to have a fire extinguisher handy! :-) Good luck!
