Re: Breakerless Ignition w/ SMITH Tach 1800 70

The problem is that your tach is series connectes and works on current rather than voltage. With the electronic ignition, there is plenty of voltage, but not nearly enough current to drive the Smiths tach.

The solution is to get a separate tachometer drive circuit that works with the voltage pulses and generates the proper current to drive the tach. Most makers of electronic aftermarket ignition systems can supply the proper adapter to drive the tach. COntact them and explain that you have a Smiths SERIES CONNECTED tachometer and they should be able to supply the correct adapter. If not, I believe that there is an article in a very old SEES (Volvo Sports America) magazine that has a circuit diagram so that you can build your own as I did for a 71 1800E that I had.
