Re: rear hatch glass removal 200 84

Tony --

I've done about a dozen of 'em (and have another to do this week).

First, remove the inside trim panel, and locate and unplug the two wires to the defroster. Pop the oval-shaped grommets out and pull the wires out. Carefully pull the wires out from under the rubber gasket.

Next, using several screwdrivers, pry the rubber gasket up 'n over the metal flange. I like to start at a lower corner, and 1/4" by 1/4" work my way along the bottom edge of the window gasket. After you've pried the gasket over about 6" of flange it becomes much easier to keep the edge of the gasket outside the flange.

Next, work your way about halfway up each side. At this point, open the tailgate so it's horizontal (otherwise the glass might tend to fall, 'though it would hang up on the wiper).

With the tailgate up, finish along each side. Reach over the tailgate, lift the wiper off the glass, and remove the glass with the rubber gasket still on it.

Reinstallation of the glass is a different trick. It's best done with a helper.

Find some heavy cord (twine) or mechanic's wire, and wrap it completely around the gasket in the groove. Slop some soapy water in the groove and on the flange.

Lift the window up onto the lower flange (engaging in the bottom of the gasket), climb into the car, and close the tailgate. Be sure to have several screwdrivers with you.

You helper should push the glass in and down. And you, inside, slowly pull one end of the cord. As it peels out of the groove, it "zips" the lip of the gasket over the flange. Your helper should push the window in where you're "zipping" -- otherwise the gasket may tend to pop out again.

Because you start at the bottom, it's best to "zip" about halfway up one side, and then about halfway up the other side. This equalizes the forces. (Otherwise, the window will be offset and "zipping" the other side will be difficult.)

Finally, "zipping" the top can be difficult because the window may be slightly displaced upwards. As you pull the cord, you may need to help peel the rubber lip using a screwdriver.

As you near the end, the cord will want to pull through and out of the groove without "zipping". Hold back on the free end to prevent that.
