Electric side-mirrors with strange faults! 700 1988

Hello all!

I donīt know if anyone can help me with this problem I have stumbled into. But perhaps someone can give me a hint what is wrong and I would certainly be very thankful.Iīm writing from Volvos homeland, Sweden.

Last summer I bought a complete electric windows kit for all four doors and a central locking kit from Volvo dealer. As You probably know it follows very good instructions to install it and the final result was perfect, everything worked as it should be.I had to buy the control panel for the drivers door separately, I got one that also has the switches for electric side-mirrors because I planned to install those later. In the winter I bought a central locking motor and installed it in the drivers door and hooked the alarm to it so I would get keyless entry, it works perfect also.So Iīm beginning to know where the wires is in the car, I have also put in a cruise control and electric motor for the sunroof plus all the stereo things.

Then I bought the electric side-mirror with heating kit from Volvo in early spring and I began to install it this week.Followed the instructions page by page and it went fine with everything at least I thought until I had put all things back and was ready for the test of the mirrors, well they donīt work perfect thatīs a fact.

I should guess that there is several of You that has electric mirrors and know how they should work. When I push the switch (control button) forwards towards the front of the car then the mirror moves in horizontal way, the outer edge of the mirror moves out from the mirror-house, very strange I thought because it is meant that the mirror should move vertical not the opposite. When I push the switch backwards against the rear of the car then the mirror moves in horizontal way but in the opposite direction then the last maneuver. When I push the switch to the left it just clicks in the mirror house (moving plate) and when I push the switch to the right nothing happens. So here is a very peculiar problem for You to break and I hope You will.

It is the same fault with both of them, if it only would be one then I would understand that I had mixed up some wires wrong but same problem with both it doesnīt make sense. If so it only could be the passenger mirror I would have a slight chance to miss-wire because into the drivers door it only goes +12 volt (orange) from the fuse box to the both switches and one ground wire (black) and that wire is spliced to the switches for the windows and the switch for the central locking also, all of them has the same ground wire and Yes I have checked that it is safely hooked up to the ground point at the fuel box on the passenger side. Then from the switch for the drivers mirror it goes four wires to the split-contact inside the door and there the heating wire also joins for the last way up to the mirror. So it is impossible that there is any kind of wrong wiring from the switch up to the mirror, yet I have checked the connections many times. From the switch for the passenger mirror it goes three wires cross the inside of the car (through four split-contacts) to the passenger door (one split-contact inside the door). The wiring harness in both doors I installed last summer, it followed with the electric windows and include all wires for the doors including the wires for the mirrors and also the contacts.Through the driver door it goes five wires for the mirrors, orange +12 volt, blue-green heating, a white-green, a white-blue and a white-brown wire.Through the passenger door it goes a white-green, a white-blue, a white-brown and a black wire ground for the passenger mirror, it is also securely grounded.

Lets take a look at the switch and mirror motor for the drivers door.Inside the mirror house it is a small electric motor, the white-blue and the white-brown goes to it.They are for to drive the motor, just change the polarities for it to go the other direction, that the switch should see to.The motor drives a tiny gear that in its turn drives a lever that moves the mirror in horizontal way, not hard to understand. But then it is the vertical way, above the motor it is a second part, the white-green and the black wire goes to that.It also have a gear that controls a lever that adjusts the vertical way of the mirror. In the middle between the motor and the upper thing it is some kind of moving plate that moves up to the upper thing but only when there is +12 volt on the white-green wire.I have checked the wire schematics in the Haynes and there You see clearly how all wiring is for the electric mirrors, white-blue and white-brown to the motor and white-green and black to yes what, I guess it is kind a like an relay, when it gets voltage it moves.Well when this thing moves up and the motor goes then it drives the upper gear and the vertical lever. The only work the mowing plate has to do is that it will see to that it make contact to the upper part and the motor distributes its power to that part. But only when the green-wire has +12 volt, cut the voltage to it and the plate drops to the motor.I took loose the motor housing and tested it on the kitchen table, I got everything to work, adjusted the mirror in all four directions, the motor is just to change polarities on to move it horizontal and then include the mowing plate to move it vertical.

So lets go for the control switch, I took it apart because I wanted to see how it works.Oh man it came out several tiny parts, down on the floor, but I found everyone and could put it together but first I wrote down how it works, the connections and so on.The main part is that +12 volt (orange) goes in on one junction and the ground (black) on one another. From both of them it goes copper plates in zick-zack around three moving little parts that gets contact with this copper plates when I move the switch arm and in that way get +12 volt or is grounded. To these three moving things the white-green, white-blue and white-brown wire is connected to.So as You can understand the job the control switch has is to distribute the +12 volt and ground to the correct wire/wires.For the mirror to move horizontal it is enough for the switch to distribute +12 volt to the white-blue or the white-brown-wire and ground to the other wire of them and then change the polarities inside the switch to make the mirror go the other way around, but when I want to move the mirror vertical the switch must also send +12 volt through the green-white wire so the mowing plate moves up and the power from the motor drives the upper part.It is same there just change the polarities of the motor to get the mirror move in the other direction.

If someone has managed to read through all this what do You think, can You see any kind of total miss I have done, please tell me for I want the mirrors to work as they should be.Any help is appreciated. The wiring it canīt be any kind of wrong with, I have checked them several times, the motors works but in total incorrect direction, can it be wrong switches Iīve got because I have studied them and how much I rearrange the connections to the switch on the paper I canīt get any sense out of it.It seems that there is no way the mirrors will function correctly with these control switches, do anyone knows if Volvo did change the switches in some years to different ones so maybe I have got wrong ones.It spells

W-Germany on them so they are old.On the instructions it says 740 1988-, it means the kit is for the 88 years model and up, can I have got some switches that is pre 88 years model or what?I have looked through Haynes but canīt see any differences but there is probably a chance there is.I guess this problem is not quite common but it is really irritating to me.I have tried all I can to figure it out but canīt get it.Sherlock Holmes where are You?

Very thankful for any help!
