dead on road (formerly engine cut out...) 700 1987

Well now I've pushed it until the car died on the road today. It cut out a few times and then started acting like it was running out of gas. The tach stayed steady. Finally it died and before I pushed in the clutch, white smoke was coming out of the tailpipe. Then when I tried to crank it again, white smoke came out. Now when I try to crank it, it just turns but nothing- including smoke. I checked the fuel pump relay and it appeared to be new.I looked inside and it looks new inside- PO must have replaced it. I had the car towed home and I'll do some diagnostics this weekend. Any other ideas are appreciated.
