Throttle kills the engine 200 1987

I need help solving a technical quandary that might result, if solved, in my adding an '87 245 to the Family Fleet for $200. Or, my friend might buy it to teach his daughter to drive in it. Anyway, The guy at the local (read: 40 miles away) VW dealer took in an '87 240 wagon on trade. It starts and idles fine, but sputters and conks out when throttle is applied. Any ideas? He wants it off his lot, because the nearest Volvo place to him is 30 miles away and he doesn't want to tow it there or spend $500 trying to figure out what's wrong.
