Front A-Arm Bushings on 89 245 200 89

I hear a thud under my feet when driving over bumps. The Volvo dealer stated that the bushings were shot and that it is about $150 to change bushings on both sides.

Q: How many bushings are there per side and should they all be done at the same time?

Q: Is the sole purpose of the bushings for noise only. Does replacing them improve anything else? What is there purpose?
