speedometer misreads 200 1984

The speedometer on my 84 245 is performing oddly. When I start to drive it the speedometer is fine(seems to be). After about 20 miles it reads okay only under about 40 mph. At that point it will only approach the proper reading when there is little or no load on the engine(level highway, or downhill). More load on the transmission causes the needle to drop. Is it a simple lubrication problem? The archives had mentions of non-working speedos, but none like this. I would appreciate any help, Brickboard is a great resource for us.
