My '92 965 is in need of new front shocks (rear Nivomats are brand new). I find the stock shocks (non-gas, no compression dampening) to be a little floaty, especially when weighted in a corner, and so would like to replace them with better performing gas shocks. Bilsteins are out of the question...so don't even bother suggesting them. I find them to be WAY to harsh for most of the driving I do and they're out of my budget.
I had Boge Turbo Gas shocks on my old 760T and, although the car handled well, I found that I didn't like the compromise in ride quality for my daily commuting. I spend 99.999999% of my time sitting in traffic.
So...I guess my question is, are there any shocks in-between the stock Boge Automatics and the Turbo-Gas and Bilsteins? How about the Boge Pro-Gas shocks? IPD stopped selling them for the 700/900 series because they were too "soft" (that's all I could get out of the guy). I can't see how they could be any "softer" than the stock ones...seeing as how the stock shocks aren't gas shocks and have 0 compression dampening. I know there are a lot of options out there, but I'm only familiar with stock, the Turbo Gas, and Bilsteins and so would appreciate any input about other options.
Keep in mind, also, that they will be coupled with the rear Nivomats so I don't want to have super-stiff front shocks and the more compliant Nivomats in the back and end up with poorly matched suspension.
I'm willing to give up a little ride quality for better performance, but not to the level of the Turbo Gas and Bilsteins. I'm not looking to carve up any mountain roads or anything, but would like the car to feel less floaty on sweeping curves (like on the highway). Also, I find that on our washboard SoCal freeways, the stock shocks tend to lose their effectiveness pretty quick (i'm guessing this is a product of them not being gas shocks and the oil heating up/foaming and thus losing their dampening properties).
Any suggestions would be appreciated...
