Towing with O/D ??? 200 1983

The manual says never tow with the overdrive engaged, but there must be some permitted weight without damaging the O/D. If I load my wagon with camping gear and 4 adults there has to be 1500lbs in there. Why is towing a 1500 load any different? Also, I found a good oil temp guage out of a 240 in salvage yard, where did volvo put the oil temp sensor? I have a turbo and I think this is a good guage to have. Thanks guys.
