AMM quandry 200 1987

I have an 87 240 with about 150K miles. Should I replace the air mass meter? The car runs fine, but I've been reading that a bad AMM is one of the most frequent causes of no-start. Is this component one that should be regularly replaced, like a timing belt is? Advice appreciated.
