Greasing rear axle, good or bad? 700 1989

Hey all, here is my question. Would greasing the rear axle help anything? My brother who is a a&p mechanic, airplane mechanic, and a classic Volkswagen Buff, said that with the mileage that my 1989 740GL has, it would help. Im not so sure what that would help, and if so, how much.

It has 156,000 miles, and Im starting to notice little things that make funny noises. Im debating on weather or not to go through with it. Any ideas, or advice would be greatly appreciated!!!
