battery is not charging 200 83

the car: 1983 242 GLT ---I recently had no power going from the alternator to the battery, i grabbed a used aternator from another volvo and it didnt work either. At the big red wire i have 12.5 volts-[while not running]-and 12.5 while running. The ground is good. Is there a voltage regulator in this car and if so what does it lok like and where is it? any help would be great, thanks
