Re: 83 240DL timing belt / shaft alignment difficulties 240-260 83

ICQ>

Your timing belt should have a single mark for the cam and idler shaft gears that lines up with a punch mark on the gear or a slot on the belt flange. The belt should have TWO lines that line up with the crank mark. Note carefully where the crank mark is (on the flange - small notch). The two lines on the belt should straddle the notch. I find that it is a lot easier to line up the crank notch a little to the left of straight up so that you can see the belt marks line up with it. Keep the belt clamped with a couple of strong spring clips on the cam and idler shaft gears so that the marks stay lined up with the belt. Then, if necessary, you can turn the crank with the belt on it slightly to check alignment without screwing up the alignment at the cam and idler shafts. Also, note that the belt will only go on one way such that all the belt marks line up with the gear marks.
