Re: Bringing Power door locks back to life... 240-260 1983

ICQ>

Martin ---

My '82 had intermittent locks for years. They'd work fine one day, then quit for a week. I checked all the things already mentioned, and finally traced it to a poor crimp connection at one of the two relays. It was the wire coming from the fuse block, so when it failed, the locks were completely dead. I found I could "reactivate" the locks by tugging on the wiring harness behind the glovebox, and also turn off the locks by tugging again.

The relays are identical, are metal, and are sealed so cannot be opened and resoldered (and on these relays, there's nothing inside to resolder). They are located under the ventilation nozzle in the center of the dash. One relay unlocks, and the other locks. You can hear them clicking when you push/pull the door button (lock the doors, then push the button again several times).

It takes 3 minutes to find them -- remove the dash pocket and pry 'n pull the ventilation nozzle out of the dash. They're lying on top of a wiring harness.

For me, soldering the crimp connections permanently solved the problem.
